New Study Shows Brad Pitt's 'Moneyball' Generating Oscar-Level Buzz Online (Exclusive)

Sony Pictures I have learned that BoxOffice.com, a popular and widely trusted website that specializes in predictions and analysis of movie box office figures, will release a special report to its subscribers later today about Moneyball, the baseball drama starring Brad Pitt that will open in theaters this Friday. According to the release, Moneyball is generating even more buzz on social-networking sites than The Social Network, another Scott Rudin-produced film that hit theaters almost exactly a year ago (Moneyball will open one week earlier) and wound up grossing nearly $225 million and scoring eight Oscar nominations, three of which resulted in wins. BoxOffice.com editor Phil Contrino tells me that the site has been tracking Facebook and Twitter activity since May 2010, and based its conclusions -- which he says are statistically significant -- on stats gathered from monitoring the two sites over the weekend before the films opened. On Facebook, The Social Network received 34,645 "likes" within that period, whereas Moneyball received 64,073. On Twitter, meanwhile, the former was the subject of 4,120 Tweets, whereas the latter was mentioned in 5,264. STORY: 'Moneyball': What the Critics Are Saying What does it all mean? "It shows that Moneyball has genuine breakout potential," says Contrino, who predicts that the audience for that film will skew older than it was for The Social Network. "Adults are clearly hungry for serious-minded flicks with Oscar buzz after a summer full of movies aimed at teens. Just look at how well Midnight in Paris and The Help did at the box office." FILM REVIEW: 'Moneyball' He adds, "The idea of putting Pitt in a sports movie could turn out to be a brilliant one. Women who normally wouldn't go for a brainy baseball flick won't get dragged to this one kicking and screaming." Brad Pitt Moneyball

Livid ((Livide))

A Dimension Films release (in U.S.) of a La Fabrique 2 production, in association with SND -- Groupe M6, La Ferme! Prods., Plug FX. Produced by Verane Frediani, Frank Ribiere. Executive producer, Vincent Brancon. Directed by Julien Maury, Alexandre Bustillo. Screenplay, Maury, Bustillo. With: Catherine Jacob, Marie-Claude Pietragalla, Chloe Coulloud, Chloe Marcq, Felix Moati, Jeremy Kapone, Beatrice Dalle.Following their savage home-invasion shocker "Inside," horror-buff co-helmers Julien Maury and Alexandre Bustillo go for the gothic with "Livid," an inferior thriller that nonetheless finds the French filmmakers unleashing a handful of memorably nasty images. Tale of a young nurse-in-training who gets menaced by vampiric ballerinas while seeking hidden treasure in the old, dark house of an evidently comatose crone, the pic is so eager to go over the top that, in the end, it doesn't make much sense. Still, this Dimension Films pickup delivers enough stylish jolts and giggles to sustain the interest of discerning gore-hounds. Early on, the movie's 20-ish heroine (Chloe Coulloud), whose differently colored eyes give her a spooky look of her own, encounters an unconscious old woman (Marie-Claude Pietragalla) who breathes like Darth Vader from a gigantic mask strapped to her withered face. While being trained in the basics of elder care by the callous Mrs. Wilson (Catherine Jacob), Coulloud's cash-poor Lucie learns that the bedridden Mrs. Jessel, a former dance instructor, has a fortune stashed away somewhere in the recesses of her dilapidated mansion. Over beers on Halloween night, Lucie's fisherman beau (Felix Moati) and his brother (Jeremy Kapone) persuade the young nurse to break into the house with them and look for the loot. Unsurprisingly, things don't go according to plan for the trio. First, they accidentally lock themselves inside the pitch-black house. Then they're driven nuts by fleeting glimpses of mounted animal heads, life-like mannequins dressed as ballerinas, and bizarre taxidermy tools. (Maury and Bustillo prove fond of false scares to a fault.) And then the group discovers that old Mrs. Jessel isn't fully bedridden after all. From here, "Livid" throws elements of a half-dozen horror subgenres at the wall to see what sticks, tossing in slashers, flesh-eaters, eye-stitching freaks, butterflies emerging from human mouths, a floating ghost-cum-angel, and Beatrice Dalle as Lucie's mom. Exactly how all these terrors fit together isn't clear, and the writer-directors don't establish enough of a camp vibe to signal that the pic ought to be taken that way. To their credit, though, Maury and Bustillo work wonders with castmembers young and (very) old, while the reliably sharp editing of mononymous Baxter cuts to the bone and beyond. Visual effects are, like the narrative, all over the place, but other tech credits hit the mark, including Raphael Gesqua's pulsing score and multichannel sound work that more than compensates for what d.p. THR: How did your boyfriend or girlfriend of musical theater develop? Harris: I used to be a kid dwelling in a tiny New Mexico town when cassettes were turning to be Dvds. With cast albums came these literature that shown pictures in the productions as well as the librettos in the musicals. They offered us a window into what that world ought to be like. To create back that could be kick-ass. THR: You directed an plane pilot for CBS the 2009 pilot season and were installed on direct a component film referred to as Aaron & Sarah. Do you have expects to complete more? Harris: Yes, however only have three and a half several days yearly to make it happen throughout my hiatus from Mother. Aaron & Sarah didn't happen because of organizing. THR: The thing that was the advantage of doing The Smurfs as well as the Muppets? Harris: It's significant as an actress being as broad within your census as you possibly can. I'm grateful that we achieve do Mother, which honors one large audience, however'm also allowed the Harold & Kumar films and Smurfs all concurrently. That's the career I've been angling for -- trying hitting on as much cylinders after i can without oversaturating my market. Are You Ready for Charlie Sheen's Big Screen Return in Charlie Swan III?

Once upon a time, as The Playlist recalls, a bloviating crazy person named Charlie Sheen claimed he’d be starring in a sequel to Major League directed and written by Roman Coppola (for his first feature since his debut, 2001’s CQ). Turns out Sheen spits half-truths: He won’t be returning to the cineplex in a baseball movie, but another project with Coppola called A Glimpse Inside the Mind of Charlie Swan III. No official word yet on his casting, but you’ll see that Sheen deserves no other part but the unraveling title character. Variety’s plot description: “The story follows a successful graphic designer whose fame, money and charm have made him irresistible to women only to have his life to spiral downwards when his girlfriend breaks up with him.” Nice that Sheen is projecting his plight onto a movie character instead of wheeling it to stadiums across the nation again. He’ll be costarring with Coppola cousin Jason Schwartzmann too, which is pleasant counterbalance of sanity. But wait: Sanity. Does that apply here? Or have we lost touch for good? Is it the right time for a Charlie Sheen comeback, or are you through with his wizardry for good? [Variety, The Playlist]

Happy 69th Birthday, Werner Herzog! What's His Finest Screen Accomplishment?

Labor Day isn’t the only reason to roll out the grill and invite your friends over: The one and only Werner Herzog was born on this day in 1942. The intervening decades would establish him as a leader of the New German Cinema, a dramatic visionary, a relentlessly curious documentarian, the paragon of ecstatic truth, and one of modern movies’ most enduringly intriguing filmmakers. Let’s wish Herzog a happy 69th birthday with a run through some of his greatest achievements. While I love Herzog’s nonfiction, his narrative films of the ’70s and ’80s tend to stick with me longer after viewing. The turbulent Klaus Kinksi collaborations — most notably Aguirre: The Wrath of God and Fitzcarraldo — are watchable and rewatchable almost without exception, yielding new perspectives and revelations with each viewing. He made equally strong work with the tragic, troubled Bruno S., resulting in the tandem of The Enigma of Kaspar Hauser (1974) and their wild American sojourn Stroszek (1977). But pound for pound, nothing beats Heart of Glass (1976), a sublime bit of insanity about a Bavarian village thrown into uncertainty after the local glassworks proprietor dies, taking the secret of his lucrative “Ruby Glass” with him to the grave. Interesting enough, but then Herzog went and hypnotized the entire cast. A sort of psychic languor ensues, beautifully reflecting the trancelike effects of crisis on individuals and community. It’s not without its dark humor, either — hypnosis does funny things to people — but Herzog’s narrative anchors the experiment against shipwrecking in the shallow waters of exploitation. Nevetheless, the best thing in Heart of Glass is the one scene Herzog acknowledged was too dangerous for hypnosis: The glassblowing montage. Here the filmmaker’s documentary gifts harmonize with his dramatic instincts in a way his work has emulated in the decades since with varying degrees of success. Mind-blowing commences right around the 2:00 mark. Weigh in with your own suggestions below… and happiest of birthdays to Herzog.
